LANAP: Are You a Candidate?

Gum disease is all too common, affecting almost half of all American adults. Bacteria and plaque continuously accumulate on the surfaces of the teeth. Tender gum tissue can become inflamed when exposed to bacteria, and it starts to pull away from your teeth, creating a pocket between your teeth and gum tissue. In addition to making your gums tender, swollen, and red, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, which can make your gums recede, cause serious infections, and ultimately lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

The traditional treatment for gum disease involved cutting into the gum tissue, folding it back, and then manually cleaning the teeth to remove plaque and tartar accumulations below the gum line. However, LANAP, which stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is a newer, more effective, and much more comfortable treatment to eradicate diseased tissue and encourage the gums to reattach to the teeth.

During LANAP, Dr. Edwards will use a laser tool with a small probe attached to the tip to clean between your gingival pockets and your teeth. The probe emits a powerful beam of light to quickly and selectively remove diseased tissue. This laser beam also sanitizes the area, reducing inflammation and fending off infections. After the pockets are cleaned, an ultrasonic tool is used to resurface the teeth. LANAP is a highly effective treatment, and Dr. Edwards may be able to use this cutting-edge procedure to restore your smile.

How Do I know If LANAP Is for Me?

Every patient is different, which is why it is important to see Dr. Edwards to see if you are a candidate for LANAP. During this consultation, the doctors will inspect the overall health of your teeth and gums, and check for underlying infections.

You might be a candidate for LANAP if:

You Have Deep Gingival Pockets

The deeper your gingival pockets, the more advanced your case of periodontitis. Candidates for LANAP in Indianapolis typically have a gingival pocket depth of at least 5 mm. If you have more shallow pockets, even less invasive procedures may be enough to halt the progression of periodontal disease.

You Exhibit Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Patients who exhibit symptoms of any form of periodontal disease—mild or advanced—are candidates for LANAP. Here are some things that Dr. Edwards will look for during your initial exam.

If you do have periodontal disease, the doctor will work with you to plan your treatment. Patients are commonly asked to alter their standard oral hygiene practices to be more thorough or integrate an antibacterial mouthwash or rinse. Next, Dr. Edwards will talk with you about when you should have LANAP and what to expect during the procedure.

Recommendations from Other Dental Professionals

You might also be a candidate for LANAP if your normal doctor or dentist recommends you to a periodontist. Unlike normal general dentists, periodontists receive an additional three years of specialized training to understand how to effectively treat gum disease and periodontitis.

The Benefits of LANAP Over Traditional Treatment

LANAP is unique because it doesn’t involve an incision, which improves the patient experience, reduces your chances for infection, and speeds recovery. The actual LANAP process is also much more comfortable, with many patients reporting the experience to be mostly pain-free. Patients who receive LANAP also experience less gum recession, which helps to improve their appearance.
