One of the services we offer is LANAP gum disease treatment in Indianapolis. Our periodontist, Dr. Edwards, has many years of experience treating patients with all stages of gum disease. If you have an advanced case of periodontal disease, you may need surgery. There are two main methods of surgery to treat gum disease in Indianapolis and Fishers. The first is the traditional gum surgery method which uses a scalpel and sutures. The second is the laser surgery method, known as LANAP. At Indy Implants, we offer the LANAP surgery option. This guide will go into detail about the two methods and discuss why we use LANAP.

Traditional surgery for gum disease uses a scalpel. The dentist moves the gum tissue back for visibility to clean the pocket and reduce its depth. The depth of the pocket is lessened by cutting away tissues. Also, in some cases, you may need bone grafting or membrane materials to reattach the gum tissue to the root of the tooth. There are a small number of cases that have to be treated using traditional surgery. But, the majority of patients can use the Indianapolis LANAP method, which is less invasive and more comfortable.

How does the LANAP method work?

LANAP laser gum surgery allows gum disease treatment without using a blade or sutures. This surgery is much less invasive than the traditional method. As a result, there is much less pain involved for the patient. The laser used operates on a wavelength that can sense the difference between diseased gum tissue and healthy gum tissue. This makes this method effective and safe when used to treat periodontal disease. This exciting method allows us to remove the diseased tissue without cutting or removing the healthy tissues. Laser surgery is precise and effective compared to the older, traditional method of surgery.
