Laser periodontal therapy uses advanced methods to remove the bacteria from underneath your gums. This technology allows you to get similar results as traditional periodontal flap surgery. The advantage to laser periodontal therapy is that it is much less invasive and requires no stitches. This therapy is used for people wanting to improve their oral health.
The mouth is the gateway to whole body health. We at Implant Dentistry and Periodontics use approaches to maximize your oral health, allowing you to be healthier and enjoy more energy. When your mouth harbors a chronic bacterial infection like periodontal disease, it is hard on your entire immune system and whole body organ systems. Utilizing the advance expertise and technologies that are available at Implant Dentistry and Periodontics, you can achieve an improved oral health.
Laser periodontal therapy uses advanced methods to remove bacteria from underneath your gums. The laser kills periodontal pathogens by relaxing the gum tissue, reaching the deepest pockets for a thorough cleaning and promotion of healing. The laser that we use at our office is designed specifically to treat periodontal disease and is different from many lasers that a general dentist would typically use. This technology uses the emission of light to seek out periodontal pathogens and kill them along the root surface of the tooth and in the surrounding tissue. As the laser is used underneath the gum, it relaxes the tissue enough that we can access the deepest pockets. By accessing the deep pockets and rigorously cleaning the root surfaces, we have the opportunity to achieve optimum periodontal health. We then change the setting on the laser so that a fiber and clot can be formed to seal the periodontal pocket. This fiber and clot serves as the early stage of the new gum-tooth-root fiber connection.

Another recent development in periodontal treatment is the use of laser to regenerate tissue. Utilizing the body’s own natural ability to “heal itself”, Dr. Edwards utilizes the PerioLase™ for the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™). Performed without a scalpel and sutures, LANAP™ creates an environment for regeneration of the tissues around your teeth (gum, bone, cementum, ligament) that are lost due to periodontal disease.
The laser therapy works by targeting only diseased gum, which it discerns by the color. Diseased gums are darker than healthy gums. The laser is then used to agitate the healthy tissue, encouraging it to reattach to the bone. Because of the regrowth of this connective tissue, there is also a much lower chance of gum disease returning than with traditional surgery.
Due to the ability of the laser to target and remove only diseased tissue, Dr. Edwards is able to help restore you to health with no post-operative pain and fewer side effects and risks than traditional surgery. This is in conjunction with a detailed homecare program that is described below.
