Preparing for Dental Implants

Every patient is different and every mouth has different needs, especially when it comes to preparing for dental implants. Implant placement is a delicate process and there are many factors which can lead to implant failure. For the best chance of success, you’ll need to prepare carefully beforehand, following all the steps that Dr. Edwards recommends.

If you are looking for dental implants in Indianapolis, the first step to a successful procedure is to meet with Dr. Edwards for a comprehensive dental exam. Dr. Edwards will create a custom treatment plan designed to fit your individual needs and cover what you can do specifically to prepare yourself for receiving implants.

Healthy Gums

For your implant procedure to be a success, you will need to have healthy gums without any active infection that could compromise the implant site. At Implant Dentistry and Periodontics, we can help return infected gums to full health. We are pleased to offer perioscope treatment for gum disease, which is less invasive than surgical options.

You will also to need to maintain healthy gums after implants are placed, so a strong commitment to oral hygiene is essential. You should be brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. Additionally, because tobacco products dry out the mouth and contribute to infection, you’ll have to commit to stopping any smoking or chewing habits for the entire course of the procedure and healing.

Bone Grafts

A successful dental implant relies on the jawbone for support, but in some cases, the bone is not thick or sturdy enough to do the job. In that case, you may need a bone graft before implants can be placed. After the surgery you’ll have to wait, sometimes several months, for the transplanted bone to fuse with the natural bone in the area before dental implants can be placed.

Dental implants are the most successful technique in dentistry today. One reason implants are so successful is because of the precautions we take to prepare for an implant procedure. At Implant Dentistry and Periodontics, we are committed to providing you with the highest level of care. For dental implants in Fishers and Indianapolis, contact us today.

I didn’t realize that tobacco products cannot be used during the entire course of the procedure and healing. My little brother is wanting to get an implant put in because he had a permanent tooth removed due to growing sideways. I’ll have to make sure that he starts to wean off smoking so that he can stop when the time comes.
