Scaling and Root Planing

Having a healthy mouth is about more than having white, cavity-free teeth. Your gums are equally important to your oral well-being. Unfortunately, many people don’t know to pay attention to their gums, leaving millions of Americans with unnecessary gum disease. Worse, if left untreated, gum disease can compromise the health of your teeth anyway!

At Implant Dentistry and Periodontics, we want you to have the healthiest mouth possible, which means we work to diagnose and treat gum disease before it progresses. That’s why we offer premier dental deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, to help cure infection before it becomes severe. If you notice that your gums are red, swollen, bleeding, or painful, contact us today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Edwards.

Although most people don’t realize it, your gums are a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to a healthy smile. Keeping your teeth clean, white, and healthy is important, but the gums provide the support and protection your teeth need to stay that way. Here are a few of the things healthy gums can do for your teeth.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing are treatment options for mild to severe gum disease. Gum disease is caused by bacteria found in plaque and tartar. When the bacteria is allowed to stay on your teeth and gums, infection occurs. This infection moves below your gum line, making it impossible for the problem to be fixed with routine brushing. Professional experience is necessary to cure gum disease.

Dental scaling and root planing are treatment techniques that clean below the gum line, removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria deep in the pockets of your gums. By disrupting and removing these colonies of bacteria, we give your gums time and space to heal.

Your gums are one of the most important supporting structures in your mouth. When they are unhealthy, your teeth are also at risk.

What Can I Expect During a Treatment?

Scaling and root planing begins with a thorough examination of your mouth. Dental scaling uses either an ultrasonic instrument or a manual instrument to remove plaque and bacteria from the surface of your teeth and below your gumline. We then plane, or smooth, the roots of your teeth to make it harder for bacteria to regain a foothold. In some cases, an antibiotic fiber will be temporarily placed near your roots to treat infection and speed healing time. These fibers will be removed later.

Based on the severity of your gum disease, these procedures can take anywhere from one to four visits. Most patients experience very little discomfort during the procedure, and we'll help you stay comfortable during the treatment.

If you believe you have any stage of gum disease, contact us today for an examination. We can help put you back on track for a healthy, beautiful smile.
