Bar-retained dentures are a restoration type of implant-supported dentures called "overdentures". They are much more secure and provide a better fit than traditional dentures which can constantly slip and eventually wear down your gums.

Bar-retained dentures are a restoration type of implant-supported dentures called "overdentures". They are much more secure and provide a better fit than traditional dentures which can constantly slip and eventually wear down your gums.

This implant treatment involves the placement of two to four implants and then the attachment of a customized bar. This bar then provides the rigid stability through a series of clips to the denture that fits over the top of the bar. The bar retained overdenture solution can be used in both the upper and lower jaws. You will be able to eat foods that you have not been able to eat in years if you have been struggling with traditional dentures.

Some Benefits of Bar-Retained, Implant Supported Overdentures

  • Stable and Secure Performance: One of the single biggest benefits of bar-mounted overdentures is that they are very stable. Whether you are biting, chewing, talking, singing, or doing just about anything else, they will remain firmly in place. Compared to the standard implant supported dentures, the bar locking dentures tend to offer a better hold and then distribute pressure more evenly throughout the mouth. This makes them more comfortable and more dependable.
  • Easily Maintained: The cleaning and maintenance are amazingly easy, making it simple to keep them in good shape over a longer period of time. There are two steps to cleaning your bar retained overdenture. The first is brushing the actual bar itself just like you would your natural teeth. It is particularly important to brush around the bar to remove any particles that would otherwise be trapped in your mouth. While you are doing that, you can also brush off your dentures and then submerge them in a cleaning solution.
  • Life Expectancy: Good quality dentures are designed to last for many years, but eventually they will fail. The bonus of our bar retained overdenture is that the bar implant will last for quite some time and even when the dentures themselves fail, it is quite easy to replace them and continue using the original bar and implants.
  • Easy to Replace: Another benefit of a bar retained overdenture is that you can easily replace the dentures if anything happens to them while keeping the supporting bar. It allows a newly fabricated denture to clip right into place just like the old one. Which means if something happens to dentures, or if one is lost, it is possible to order a replacement quickly and affordably.

How Bar-Retained Overdentures Work For Patients

Dental implants are a fantastic result of advancing technology, and many dental procedures are coming from this one improvement. Implant Dentistry and Periodontics can attach a firm mounting bar on the top of two or four dental titanium implants. This bar locks right onto the implants and establishes a very secure mounting point for the dentures themselves. It is important for the bar to be placed only after the implants have had adequate time to grow and integrate with the jawbone, but once the bar is in place, you can start using the dentures immediately to eat and do other normal activities. The bar simply serves as a locking mechanism for the specially designed dentures that snap into place over the top of it.

The Actual Procedure for the Bar Retained Overdenture

The first step in this process is to take an impression of the arch, which Implant Dentistry and Periodontics will use to create a set of temporary dentures for you. When the temporary dentures are completed, diagnostic images are taken of the jawbone to plan out the precise placement of your dental implant posts.

Next, the immediate area is administered a local anesthetic and your dental titanium implants are surgically positioned in the jawbone. Special caps are placed over your implants while you heal. During your next few appointments, we will monitor the healing process, keeping you abreast of when we feel the arch is ready for the next step of the treatment. You will continue to wear your temporary denture during this time.

Once your implants have fully grown and integrated with the bone, we will take new impressions of your mouth. These impressions will be now be used to create your support bar and final overdenture.

We will continue to check for proper fit and bite alignment of the bar and the final overdenture. It may require some minor adjustments to ensure the best result for you. Once all adjustments are finalized, the support bar is fixed in place, and the permanent overdenture is placed onto the bar.

With the restoration process completed, you will now have a removable appliance specially designed to replace your natural teeth in such a way that improves your appearance, your smile, and your self-confidence as it promotes optimal function for you when eating or speaking.
