This process will expose more of the natural tooth structure, and the treatment may be carried out for a variety of different reasons.

Crown lengthening is a simple surgical dental procedure to remove excess gum tissue and sometimes bone. This process will expose more of the natural tooth structure, and the treatment may be carried out for a variety of different reasons.

The crown lengthening procedure may be necessary for a couple of different situations. You may simply have too much gum tissue covering up your teeth and need to have the levels adjusted to frame a nicer smile. Or we may find it necessary to remove some of the bone as well as gum tissue, lengthening the tooth so it looks more aesthetically pleasing when finished.

At Implant Dentistry and Periodontics, we offer a wide variety of periodontal and dental implant services which includes crown lengthening. Our compassionate and attentive team focuses on one goal and that is the quality of your smile. We work with each patient in a peaceful, comfortable setting, and are committed and dedicated to approaching your dental care as an important partner on your health team. If you would like to have an evaluation and consultation about a possible crown lengthening procedure, call our Indianapolis office at 317-574-0600 or our Fishers office at 317-842-2273 to schedule your appointment today.

Are You a Candidate for Crown Lengthening?

If you are unhappy with your gummy smile you may be a candidate for this procedure. A development of excess gum tissue or an uneven gum line can negatively affect your perception of your smile. We will reshape or contour your gum line to shorten the excess gum tissue and increase the length of your teeth.

At first it seems an aesthetic issue, but if you have a gummy smile you may have an underlying issue as well. A gummy smile may be the result of how the jawbone was initially developed. If the upper jawbone seems to bulge out more than how it normally should, it can appear to give someone a gummy smile. While this is not something that can be initially prevented, it can cause improper alignment and possibly affect your long-term health.

Another reason a gummy smile occurs is if you have an overactive upper lip. The muscles associated with this part of your mouth might pull your upper lip higher than where it should normally go. While this also does not necessarily mean a patient has a gummy smile, it can give the illusion that you do. This can be treated with this type of procedure as well.

What Is the Procedure for Crown Lengthening?

Our team at Implant Dentistry and Periodontics will first examine you to determine the actual extent of the gum tissue. Either a digital or traditional form of an impression will also be taken to help determine what it best to be done. An x-ray will also be captured so we can see any unhealthy bone or tooth roots that cannot be examined with the naked eye. This examination is necessary to make certain you are healthy and have a decent amount of healthy jawbone and tooth roots available prior to the procedure being performed. The best results come from a well-orchestrated plan.

The trained staff at Implant Dentistry and Periodontics now introduce you to the laser. This laser is pointed directly at the excess gums to be removed. The laser does not produce any heat or vibration, therefore resulting in a painless and extremely easy treatment. The laser offers a second benefit in that it will also seal up all blood vessels immediately resulting in less bleeding or swelling.

During your crown lengthening procedure, we remove the excess gum and bone tissue and reshape to expose more of your natural tooth. The crown lengthening and crown shortening procedure can be done in a matter of minutes.

The Crown Lengthening Healing Process

Full healing time is usually expected to be completed in just a few days if the gum area being treated is minimal. If there is advanced treatment needed, the healing will be longer. It is not necessary to adjust your activity level or changing your diet to quicken the healing process. You may begin eating soft foods and return to work the day after crown lengthening surgery. You will need to come back in for a follow-up visit 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure.

During your crown lengthening recovery, we will provide you with full instructions on how to pay attention to your gumline. Once the anesthesia wears off, you may feel some discomfort and if necessary, we will prescribe you pain relievers, depending on the extent of surgery.

Crown Lengthening Treatment Cost

As with most dental procedures, the final cost for your crown lengthening treatment will be determined by several factors, such as the extent of your case, number of appointments necessary, was there anesthesia involved and how much, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. We can provide you with a more accurate estimate following your initial evaluation.

Implant Dentistry and Periodontics does accept most dental insurance programs and policies and we will be happy to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance plan so you can determine what will be covered. If you are not currently covered by an insurance plan or have concerns about the final cost, we will be happy to discuss other financial arrangements with you.
