The Pinhole Surgical Technique, PST™, is a procedure in which specialized instruments are used to make a small hole in your gum tissue that is receding and to then insert collagen material to stabilize the area of gum recession.

The Pinhole Surgical Technique, PST™, is a procedure in which specialized instruments are used to make a small hole in your gum tissue that is receding and to then insert collagen material to stabilize the area of gum recession. This new method is simple, suture-free, and minimally invasive.

Receding gums, also known as gingival recession, are a common problem, especially in older adults. A study found that 88% of people over 65 have gum recession in at least one tooth. The traditional method for the treatment of gingival recession is soft tissue grafting, but you might be reluctant of this treatment because of the notion that the grafting can be very painful. This reluctance has sparked another dental innovation which is the Pinhole Surgical Technique to treat gum recession.

Implant Dentistry and Periodontics understands the issues around receding gums and the performance of the pinhole surgical technique as a viable solution to protect your oral health. We offer an extensive range of periodontal and dental implant services to help every patient. Our conscientious team works harmoniously on the team goal of providing you with quality service for your overall oral health. Our team addresses all dental procedures in a relaxing environment, and we approach your dental care as an important partner on your health care team. If you have questions about the benefits of the pinhole surgical technique, call our Indianapolis office at 317-574-0600 or our Fishers office at 317-842-2273 to schedule your appointment today.

Are You a Possible Candidate for the Pinhole Surgical Technique?

The professionals at Implant Dentistry and Periodontics will help you determine whether you are a good candidate for the Pinhole Surgical Technique. There are certain factors that direct us to making a professional decision about your candidacy for the Pinhole Surgical Technique. If your receding gums are more of an aesthetic, visual issue than they are a dental health issue, the Pinhole Surgical Technique will be a viable and worthwhile option. If you have some tooth sensitivity to receding gums, but it is not caused by active periodontal disease, you can also benefit from this modern treatment option. If you do not smoke or will quit smoking, you are also a great candidate for this procedure. If you are interested in the Pinhole Surgical Technique, you must also be in good overall health, which also applies to your dental health as well. If we diagnose you with periodontal disease, you may not be a candidate for this technique. If you do not have an adequate amount of gum tissue to use for the technique, we will not be able to perform the procedure either since a certain amount of gum tissue is required for successful results.

What are Receding Gums?

Gingival recession is when the gums wear down or they pull back from your tooth. The receding gums then reveal more of the tooth and can leave the root of the tooth exposed. This will lead to the tooth being overly sensitive and then continue to weaken the gum tissue surrounding the tooth.

You need strong, firm, non-moving, healthy gum tissue to surround and protect your teeth, but the weak tissue caused by this gum recession can create pockets of space between the gum line and the tooth. These little pockets become perfect spots for the collection of bacteria that will eventually lead to serious gum disease. If your gum recession is not corrected and treated, the structure of your teeth and tissue around it can be permanently damaged, even leading to tooth loss.

The Benefits of the Pinhole Surgical Technique

One of the biggest reasons you may be interested in the Pinhole Surgical Technique over traditional treatment methods is because this procedure can address multiple locations in one sitting. Gum grafting, on the other hand, requires multiple appointments if there are multiple teeth affected by gingival recession. The Pinhole Surgical Technique allows you to have your full mouth treated at once which saves you both time and money. Another benefit to the Pinhole Surgical Technique is the healing process is shorter, nor is it as painful, as the more traditional methods for treating gum recession. The primary benefits:

  • No scalpels, incisions, or sutures are necessary
  • A minimally invasive procedure
  • You enjoy immediate cosmetic improvements
  • There is minimal pain and bleeding
  • You experience a fast recovery and healing time
  • It protects your tooth roots

The Actual Procedure for the Pinhole Surgical Technique

The Pinhole Surgical Technique at Implant Dentistry and Periodontics is a minimally invasive alternative to treating gingival recession. Unlike soft tissue grafting, this process begins by creating a tiny pinhole in your gum tissue that is receding. Once the pinhole has been created, we place a device into the hole. This device will peel and stretch the gum into a healthier and more suitable position on your tooth (in layman’s terms, the gums are brought downward). Once we have the gum tissue in the desired position, we insert collagen strips into the pinhole in the gums. While soft tissue grafting uses sutures to keep the gums in place, these collagen strips keep the gums in place in a far more minimally invasive way and help to create new tissue that will ultimately secure the gums in their new permanent location.
