Dental implants are one of the latest alternatives in tooth replacement. Dental implant restoration is an outstanding solution if you have missing teeth or require tooth extraction because of advanced disease or decay. A dental implant is a small threaded titanium post that is surgically inserted into your jawbone to replace lost tooth roots. After the post has been placed and fused to the bone you will receive your dental implant restoration.  These are also called dental implant crowns.

At Implant Dentistry and Periodontics, we offer a wide variety of periodontal and dental implant services which certainly include dental implant restorations. Our detail-conscious and compassionate team concentrates on the goal of delivering and providing to you the absolute best quality for your smile. We will work with you in a peaceful, relaxed environment, and are dedicated to embracing your dental care as an especially important partner on your health team. Edwards Christman

Award Winning Periodontics
in Indianapolis and Fishers

Dedication to providing the best periodontal care to Indianapolis and Fishers isn't just something Drs. Edwards and Christman talk about. They are board certified periodontist, which means they have gone above and beyond what most periodontists do to master his field of work. They have sought out further education to bring the most promising new treatments to their patients.

The Placement of The Dental Implant

The typical dental implant restoration procedure requires two small surgeries. During your initial consultation, diagnostic imaging will help Implant Dentistry and Periodontics develop a personalized and effective treatment plan. If you have experienced significant bone loss, a bone graft will be necessary first to restore adequate bone density to create a stable base for your implant.

To make sure you are comfortable, we will administer a local anesthetic prior to the surgical process. Once numb, the simple surgery involves making an incision in the gums and then creating a pilot hole in the actual jaw. Next, we will insert the implant post, and suture the gums closed over the implant.

It will take a few months for the bone to fuse or grow to the implant. The surface of the implant has pores in it, looking much like the surface of the Moon through a telescope. After the implant is placed, the bone grows strong around the implant and grows into those pores, securing the implant in place. After this process, which is called osseointegration, is complete, you will return for a second small surgery. We will create another incision in the gums to expose the implant and then attach an extension or abutment to your dental implant, and then suture the gums closed in a way such that the abutment is exposed above the gum line. This abutment is the point of connection between the implanted post and your restoration. You might need about two weeks to heal from this final surgery.

Your Options with a Dental Implant Restoration

There are quite a few reasons why you may choose to get a dental implant and fortunately, there are also many uses for these implants. You may have encountered accidental trauma to your mouth causing loose or severely cracked teeth that must be removed. Implant Dentistry and Periodontics also encounters elderly patients who have been without most of their teeth for quite some time. Fortunately, after an in-depth consultation, dental implant restorations can be a fantastic solution.

You may have a couple of choices when it comes to dental restoration types and materials. If you require replacement of just a single tooth, we will recommend the choice of a dental crown. If you have multiple missing teeth then you are better suited for a bridge or denture, both secured by dental implants.

Porcelain and zirconia are durable, natural-looking materials that are used now to make crowns, bridges, and dentures. Both materials are applicable for use in either the anterior or posterior areas of the arch. Implant Dentistry and Periodontics will carefully choose the color of these restorations to complement your natural teeth. Both materials have a highly realistic translucency.

Benefits and Advantages of a Dental Implant Restoration

There are many advantages to dental implants, including:

  • You will enjoy an improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth.
  • Your speech will be noticeably improved and natural.
  • There are no issues with any discomfort.
  • Considerably easier biting, chewing, and eating. The posts, acting as roots, deliver pressure sensations like a real root.
  • With your smile restored you will enjoy improved self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Your dental implant restoration will contribute to improved oral health.
  • Durability is a benefit with a life expectancy of over 15 years.
  • With no removal and continued good habits of brushing and flossing they are convenient.
  • The titanium root also delivers temperature change sensations.
  • The implant also stymies the advancement of bone atrophy in the jawbone.

The Final Dental Implant Restoration Process

The final process is very straightforward. We will make a quick impression of your mouth in order to create a beautifully fitting crown, also called an artificial tooth, to then secure to the abutment. When the crown is created, we will secure it to the implant, and you will leave the office with a complete dental implant that looks very much like a natural tooth as well as matching your neighboring natural teeth.
