Dental Implants

“Dental implants are the most successful technique in dentistry today.”

- Dr. Michael Edwards

Dental implants in Fishers have a completely natural design. They anchor into place with a small titanium post that actually fuses with your natural jaw tissue. Although many assume that dental implants are a new technology, they were actually invented in the mid 1950s by a Swedish orthopedic surgeon. Since then, the technology has come a long way. Modern dental implants are stronger and more realistic than ever before. In fact, research suggests that dental implants have one of the highest success rates in all dental surgery. Nearly 100% of surgeries end up being a success.

As a certified periodontist in Indianapolis, Dr. Edwards has received years of more formal training beyond normal dental school. He has perfected the art of dental implant placement and maintenance. Dr. Edwards believes that dental implants have a long list of powerful benefits. This is why they are typically recommended to patients who are missing teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental Implants: The Procedure Explained

  1. Extractions

Receiving implants is more of a process than a single event. At times it may be beneficial to remove teeth with imperfections. An extraction can pave the way for a healthier, more attractive smile.

  2. Prerequisite Surgeries

Depending on how long your teeth have been missing, you might need other procedures before your jaw is healthy enough to receive dental implants. For example, teeth that have been missing for years might have an underlying jaw bone that has severely recessed, creating the need for a bone graft. If you are a candidate for dental implant surgery in Indianapolis, Dr. Edwards will carefully examine the health of your teeth, gums, and jaw tissue. He will also talk with you about any prerequisite surgeries you may need.

  3. Dental Implant Post Placement

After you have healed from any other procedures, Dr. Edwards will schedule your dental implant post placement. During this step, small titanium rods are surgically implanted into your jaw tissue. Careful planning and X-ray imaging will help Dr. Edwards to determine the perfect placement for posts to improve your bite and smile.

  4. Healing

After we place the titanium posts, the area needs time to heal. Dr. Edwards will place a healing cap over the post to make it easier to access the post later to place the final crown. The healing process can take a few months, but it is crucial to keep your smile comfortable and healthy.

  5. Abutment Installation

When the implant sites have healed, Dr. Edwards will remove the healing cap and add an abutment, which acts as a connector between the implant and the final crown.

  6. Molds and Final Placement

Next, molds will be taken of your teeth so that lab technicians can create natural-looking crowns. After the final crowns are fabricated, you will be asked to come back into the office to have them placed.
