Surgical Extraction and Anesthesia

If you are looking at a surgical extraction it is perfectly normal to be a little concerned. However with time, and a little research, you will see there is nothing at all to be nervous about. Many people go in for dental work around the world every day, and modern dentistry has a plan to ensure that each and every patient has a solution that can provide them comfort.

What can you expect at a surgical extraction?

Your extraction will be scheduled with your dental care team. In the early stages you should advocate for yourself and ask questions about the procedure, so you are prepared. There are many different reasons why you may need to have a surgical extraction. You can expect to arrive to your scheduled appointment and be welcomed into a sterile environment. You will then be given whatever sedation method you are comfortable with, and your dental care team will handle your extraction with care and precision as top priorities.

What kind of sedation is used in a surgical Extraction?

  • Local Anesthesia- Local Anesthesia is the most common because of its’ versatility. Most people will opt to use local anesthesia, because of its ease. Patients report a small pinch, as a tiny needle is quickly placed into the gumline, and the medicine is very quick to provide a numbing sensation throughout the mouth and jaw. Patients can then sit back while the care team works to quickly extract any harmful bacteria or broken teeth from the incisions site.
  • Sedation Pill- Some patients will opt for a more common clinical sedation pill. This could be something like a muscle relaxer, or anti anxiety medication. This is the kind of thing that can really help stabilize your mood, but you will probably want to look into an uber or a ride from a friend. There is less of a time limit to this kind of treatment.
  • Nitrous Oxide- An oldy and a goody, for a reason. Laughing gas, or its’ proper name nitrous oxide is a great option that will help patients relax and actually enjoy the procedure. The enjoyment comes to an end quickly, as the gas wears off fairly promptly, which is great for those who have families or jobs to return to.
  • General Anesthesia- General Anesthesia will knock the patient out. The only problem here is that it requires a specialist to monitor the patient, and it comes with a tad more risk. However, across the world people are put under with anesthesia millions of times a day, we are talking about fractions of a percent of increased risk.
